Brunel Professor makes literary history

12/06/20

Bernardine Evaristo, Professor of Creative Writing at Brunel University London, has made history by becoming the first woman of colour to top the UK paperback fiction charts.

Winning the Booker Prize for Fiction at the end of 2019 (joint with Margaret Atwood’s ‘The Testaments’), Bernadine’s latest book ‘Girl, Woman, Other’ has been a topseller for over 20 weeks. However, it is only now, in the wake of the ongoing Black Lives Matter protests, that it has hit the top spot.

In an interview with BBC Breakfast, Bernardine said that, in addition to her book being broadcasted as the ‘booker bedtime’ by BBC Radio 4 in early June, ‘getting to number one is to do with the Black Lives Matter movement…….people have been curating lists of books [of black authors] that other people should read, primarily white people, and I think that’s phenomenal, and really unusual".

You can currently listen to a radio edit of 'Girl, Woman, Other' for free via BBC Sounds.
